Modeling human function learning with Gaussian processes

چکیده
Accounts of how people learn functional relationships between continuous variables have tended to focus on two possibilities: that people are estimating explicit functions, or that they are performing associative learning supported by similarity. We provide a rational analysis of function learning, drawing on work on regression in machine learning and statistics. Using the equivalence of Bayesian linear regression and Gaussian processes, we show that learning explicit rules and using similarity can be seen as two views of one solution to this problem. We use this insight to define a Gaussian process model of human function learning that combines the strengths of both approaches.

Gaussian processes for flexible robot learning
As robotic systems are becoming more complex and as they are developed for increasingly realistic environments, the role of machine learning within robotics becomes even more central than it has been. Robot learning tasks typically raise a number of hard requirements for learning methods including accurate estimation of uncertainty, dealing with inhomogeneously sampled data, computational effic...
متن کاملNovel Radial Basis Function Neural Networks based on Probabilistic Evolutionary and Gaussian Mixture Model for Satellites Optimum Selection
In this study, two novel learning algorithms have been applied on Radial Basis Function Neural Network (RBFNN) to approximate the functions with high non-linear order. The Probabilistic Evolutionary (PE) and Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) techniques are proposed to significantly minimize the error functions. The main idea is concerning the various strategies to optimize the procedure of Gradient ...
متن کاملA Case Study on Meta-Generalising: A Gaussian Processes Approach
We propose a novel model for meta-generalisation, that is, performing prediction on novel tasks based on information from multiple different but related tasks. The model is based on two coupled Gaussian processes with structured covariance function; one model performs predictions by learning a constrained covariance function encapsulating the relations between the various training tasks, while ...
متن کاملSpatial Interpolation Using Copula for non-Gaussian Modeling of Rainfall Data
‎One of the most useful tools for handling multivariate distributions of dependent variables in terms of their marginal distribution is a copula function‎. ‎The copula families capture a fair amount of attention due to their applicability and flexibility in describing the non-Gaussian spatial dependent data‎. ‎The particular properties of the spatial copula are rarely ...
متن کاملThe Human Kernel
Bayesian nonparametric models, such as Gaussian processes, provide a compelling framework for automatic statistical modelling: these models have a high degree of flexibility, and automatically calibrated complexity. However, automating human expertise remains elusive; for example, Gaussian processes with standard kernels struggle on function extrapolation problems that are trivial for human lea...
